Irosoft has just announced the release of a new major version of Docuthèque Entreprise and Paperless Meetings, its solution for document and records manangment. The National Research Council of Canada has produced a translation tool that is estimated to save the Canadian translation industry millions of dollars each year. WeBiText, which has been licensed by NRC to Montréal-based Terminotix Inc., allows translators to rapidly search online for previously translated terms and expressions to locate the most suitable ones for their current work.

On January 26, Mrs. Iulia Mihalache, professor at the Université du Québec en Outaouais and developer of the Translation Ecosystem, presented Bâtir des communautés et des réseaux sociaux des langagiers. This presentation took place at the 2012 CIUTI Forum - Translators and Interpreters as Key Actors in Global Networking, at the United Nations in Geneva.

The CIUTI Forum conference in Geneva brought together representatives from the fields of training and research (professors, researchers, business leaders, trainers, translation service providers), translation professionals, government organizations, and NGOs.The topics discussed, shed some light on the role and the place of translators in the global marketplace, the relationship between translation and politics and between translation and the economy, the role of technology in knowledge and institutional capital management, the impact of social media on translator training and the links between universities and the translation market.

The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) will soon be celebrating the fifth anniversary of French Immersion Studies at the University of Ottawa. An academic forum on French immersion at the university level will take place at the University of Ottawa on February 9 & 10, 2012.

This forum will examine different models of immersion at the university level, the various people involved, the stakes, research as well as perspectives on this type of teaching.

The LTRC is looking for a Webmaster to perform several technical modifications and updates to its Web sites (crtl.ca and linguistech.ca) over an approximate 8 week period. The ideal candidate must be able to work in HTML and carry out image and multimedia content processing, among other things.

Desired qualities: autonomy, leadership, ability to work in teams and learn new technicial approaches if necessary, able to carry out tasks with discipline and speed.

Knowlege of the Tiki Wiki platform is an asset.

Mr. Isabelle is the Leader of the Interactive Language Technology Group at the National Research Council’s Institute for Information Technology (NRC).  He has also managed research groups in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at the CITI and RALI laboratories as well as the XEROX Research Centre Europe.

Mr. Isabelle presented the results of research conducted in collaboration with Caroline Barrière.  He proposed a method of searching that takes the context of the given term into account. In order to develop this technique, he assembled a corpus of 6,595 pairs of article summaries, from 8 scientific journals translated from English into French, and 1,130 terms he had previously extracted from the Grand dictionnaire terminologique, a term database created by the Office québécois de la langue française.

Using a contextualisation module (CM) that assigns a field profile to the context of a term, it is thus possible to test the validity of a term’s context. Comparing the results, it is evident that the margin is quite large between searches done with the contextualisation module and those done without it.

The success of the operation is measured by comparing the average ranking of the first term record that contains the equivalent when the search is done with and without the CM. Mr. Isabelle’s results are indisputable: the term equivalent appears much higher on the list of term records when the CM is included.

A  seminar on the search for context-sensitive term equivalents will take place on January 27. The seminar will be given by Pierre Isabelle, Leader of the Interactive Language Technology Group at the National Research Council’s Institute for Information Technology (NRC)  from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the Université du Québec en Outaouais, in room C-0426. Mr. Isabelle will also be discussing the evolution of terminological search tools. The seminar will be followed by a question period. Please note that this seminar is open to the general public, that entry is free, and that there is no need to register beforehand. Come out and participate in great numbers!

On December 19, the LTRC hosted its Holiday Lunch. Sixty or so people gathered to celebrate in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
